Lalay Raymi festival of the Cañari People
Join us in our next tour departing from Cuenca! This time it will be a 2-day tour to know about traditions and history of the southern Andes of Ecuador. We will visit the canton of El Tambo in the province of Cañar.
We will also visit a very important site in the area: the Archaeological Complex of Coyoctor (a.k.a. the INca Baths). Here you will see the remains of a former ceremonial center for the Cañari and Inca people, but that also serves for ceremonies in the current times as you will witness on this tour!
We will also know about the Cañari people and share with them in their biggest festival: the Lalay Raymi.
Learn with us about the Cañari and Inca history in El Tambo, in the province of Cañar, homeland to the brave Cañari people who survived the Inca conquest. Looking forward to meeting you!

Tour Hihglights:
During day 1 we will know about the Cañari people and their history. We will then attend a ceremony to start the Lalay Raymi at the Coyoctor Archaeological Complex which is a sacred site which also was used by the Incas. Then we will join them in the parade part of the Lalay Raymi where there will be plenty of food and joy. This big event is to celebrate and thank for the early harvest, it is the festival of the maturation and the flowering. Due to syncretism it is also celebrated during Carnival, and this is why it is called “the Cañari Carnival”. All Cañari communities prepare “pampamesas” (community tables) in which they will serve food for everyone to get as much food as they would like. However, for people who are not sure of eating from the pampamesas, we will also provide the option of eating at our hotel (just let us know in advance to inform the hotel).
In the afternoon we will get to know the central area of the town of El Tambo to learn more about its modern history. And at night, we will be able to be in a campfire by the hotel and we will learn more about the Cañari culture, or you could also participate in the big Carnival party of the communities (it is a big popular party, so you would need to be prepared for an Andean carnival party experience!).
On day 2, after breakfast, we would go to the Highlands of the canton of El Tambo to know more about the Cañari agricultural techniques and daily life. After this visit, we would go back to the hotel for having a shared lunch (pampamesa, but not as collective as the one on day 1! It would be just for us in the hotel). Then after closure with our host in El Tambo we would return to Cuenca, and we should be back in Cuenca by 4:00 p.m.
